Prof. Frens sent me a link to a github repository for something called a dataflow variables. I'm still figuring out the specifics of what's going on here, but what I'm understanding is pretty clever. Basically, it's a mechanism for creating declarative variables that are concurrency safe (i.e., if they haven't been given a value by the time they're needed, they're blocked for). To further promote safety, they also appear to be single assign.
I would try and describe _how_ they work, but I'd probably get it wrong at this point. In any case, this gives me a few ideas for alternative approaches to attempt if I keep on with this project past the semester end (which I hope to).
